Cleveland Clinic Students On Display at Hopkins Airport

EXPLORERS and eXpressions Programs Showcase “Going Places”

Every year, thousands of students participate in two innovative programs of the Cleveland Clinic’s Office of Civic Education Initiatives that use art to educate and communicate: EXPLORERS uses the arts with K-8 students to examine the critical issues of wellness and health; eXpressions works with slightly older high school students to engage them in the world of scientific research. Both free programs encourage participation in STEMM careers, in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine.

The “Going Places” exhibit, found on the ticketing level of Hopkins International Airport, next to the Delta Airlines counter, includes 21 creative projects featuring sculpture, poetry, jewelry, painting and digital illustration by participating students.

Rock Hall Announces Grateful Dead Exhibit

“The Long, Strange Trip” to Open on 4/12/12 as Part of Induction Week

“The Dead has always been about more than rock and roll: about artistic curiosity and freedom, and has always been interested in and involved with the musical gamut of the world.” - Bruce Hornsby upon inducting the Grateful Dead into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland

2012 will be a big year for Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and for Cleveland, where the Induction ceremonies will take place, as they do every three years.

Not only has the Rock Hall just opened their long-anticipated Library and Archives on the campus of Cuyahoga Community College, but they’ve also announced their newest featured exhibit: “Grateful Dead: The Long, Strange Trip,” to open on Thu 4/12 as part of a wild week of ceremonies leading up to the Induction Ceremonies.

The Grateful Dead first played together at the second LSD-fueled Acid Test staged by Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters in San Jose in 1966, were inducted into the Rock Hall in 1994, and the following year performed their 2314th (and final) concert. Art and culture were always key to the Dead, and the Rock Hall exhibit contains an unprecedented collection of original artwork recognizable from the band’s album covers and collateral. They also pushed the sonic envelope with their Wall of Sound PA system, designed by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, which is represented permanently at the Rock Hall. Individual exhibits will feature the Dead as a legendary touring band, their community of avid followers who became known as Deadheads and who often recorded the band and exchanged the tapes. In addition, the exhibit features manuscripts, notes from taper Dick Latvala (of “Dick’s Picks”), plus:
* Mickey Hart’s custom-painted drum kit
* Five Jerry Garcia guitars and two Bob Weir guitars
* The “Father of Time” robe owned by Bill Graham, the San Francisco impresario who presented the Dead at his Fillmore West and East venues

The exhibit will be open through the Induction Week events in Cleveland in April, and will remain open until December 2012.

Rock Hall Throws Open Archives

Interns Needed for Rock Hall Archives

Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum has collected thousands of books, audio recordings and videos, that, up until now, have not been accessible to the public. That all changes this week as the Rock Hall flings open the doors of it’s new Library and Archives, on the Downtown campus of Cuyahoga Community College, in a $12 million 4-story building shared with Tri-C’s Center for Creative Arts.

Included in the collection so far are over 3500 books, 1400 audio recordings and 270 videos, plus personal letters from Rock Hall inductees and rare concert footage of stars at the height of their careers. The Library and Archives is expected to comprise the most comprehensive repository of materials relating to the history of rock and roll.

You can search the Library + Archives Catalog by clicking here. A random search on “David Bowie” pulled up catalog listings for books, photos, audio recordings, audio-visual materials, business papers, interviews, posters, MTV videos, music scores, and video recordings.

Internships at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum’s Library and Archives are available in the following areas:
* Archival Arrangement, preservation and description
* Cataloging and Metadata
* Collection Development
* Digital Projects

Interested? Summer internship deadline is 2/15/12. Send a cover letter, resume and a one-page statement of what you bring to the table, to: hkosalko@rockhall.org

RTA: Seeking Transit Advocates

Are you an RTA rider who’s interested in more than just riding RTA? Want to participate in the organization’s success? RTA currently seeks Transit Advocates for its Citizen’s Advisory Board (CAB).

“The CAB is made up of RTA customers, transportation advocates and others who are interested in advising RTA leadership about their perspectives, interests and thoughts on the entire system.

“Currently there are several positions open: RTA is encouraging interested Northeast Ohio residents to apply. Time dedication depends on how much someone wants to get involved: From a few hours a month of meetings, to more passionate individuals who spend much more time advocating for RTA.

“The purpose of the CAB is to make recommendations on various issues, including current and future projects, along with comments on service changes. The group together monitors the system and current projects and represents other riders in its thoughts and suggestions passed on to RTA leaders.”

It’s Easy to Save a Life. Here’s How.

It’s Easy to Save a Life
Want to help a dog? Now’s your chance!

By Sarah Valek

Want to save life? Love dogs? Looking for a companion? Your HELP is needed! Cleveland Animal Control has several dogs that need homes (temporary or permanent). These dogs are labeled URGENT and need foster homes or permanent homes ASAP! Cleveland Animal Control aka Cleveland City Kennel, located in Tremont, rescues dogs off the streets or from abusive situations. Remember the 27 dogs rescued from that East Side dog fighting ring? Cleveland Animal Control rescued them and many were adopted out, yet eight still await rescue (like the ones pictured above).

If you feel at all bad about the pet overpopulation problem and the fact that healthy dogs are being euthanized simply because they’re homeless, now is the time for you to help. Every week the Kennel takes in new dogs and posts them to its Facebook page. (Others are transferred to the Cleveland APL or Cuyahoga County Kennel for adoption.) Only exceptional, well-behaved (read: non-violent) dogs are posted. These dogs have approximately a week to find a home/foster home. Hardworking Cleveland Animal Control volunteers do everything they can to find placement for these pooches. (Personally, I’m impressed with how well networked Cleveland animal lovers are.)

If you want to help but aren’t in the position to adopt, consider becoming a foster. If you can provide some love and attention, you can save a dog’s life. The first step to becoming a foster is to contact Cleveland Animal Control and arrange a meet-and-greet with the dog(s) you’re interested in. Bring your own dogs, your kids, and anyone else to see if everyone gets along. Have cats? Kennel volunteers will test any dogs around cats beforehand. If your meet-and-greet goes well and you wish to foster, that dog will be marked as SAFE until a rescue group steps in. The rescue will, in most cases, provide food and any veterinary care. So, really, all you need to provide is a home, love, compassion and a little patience until the dog finds his/her forever family.

Still don’t have room for a dog? All dogs are desperately in need of donations to cover medical care. The more donations a dog takes in, the better chances it has of rescue.

There are dogs from the fighting raid still in need of rescue! Many of the 27 have been adopted or placed in foster care, but, as of this moment, eight remain in cages at the Kennel.

View dogs from “The Final 8 – Hope for the 27″ here.

From Cleveland Animal Control’s profile: “We are collecting funds that will help with medical expenses as well as basic health needs such as heartworm tests, Rabies shots and spay/neuters. You can donate any amount to these dogs and every bit really adds up. If you donate $300 you will have naming rights to the dog of your choice (granted it is not already named).

“To donate online please visit http://FriendsOfClevelandKennel.com and click on ‘Make a Donation’ and type your donation amount and ‘Hope for the 27′ in the description box.

“To send a check you can address it to ‘Friends of the Cleveland Kennel’ with ‘Hope for the 27′ in the notes section and send it to:

Friends of the Cleveland Kennel
PO Box 770423
Lakewood, Ohio 44107

“If you are a rescue interested in pulling any of these dogs, please email juliemaykono@gmail.com and we can send you an application. If you are interested in fostering or adopting any of these dogs, please email juliemaykono@gmail.com so that we can add you to a list that will be shared with the rescues that pull. If you would like to volunteer to walk or bathe these dogs please contact 216-664-3187; jbaird@city.cleveland.oh.us and tell him your experience with dogs (especially with larger breed dogs).”

The better networks we create, the more dogs we can save.

Cleveland Animal Control (Cleveland City Kennel) is located at 2690 W. 7th St., Cleveland, OH. Hours are Monday – Saturday 10AM – 3PM. http://FriendsOfClevelandKennel.com.

Pets Gone Wild! Discuss Exotic Animal Legislation in Ohio

Tue 1/31 @ noon

So, why does Ohio allow people to keep exotic animals? Can anyone explain this? Learn about the issues at a City Club panel featuring Tim Harrison, Founder, Outreach for Animals; L. Patricia Simmons, President & CEO, Akron Zoo and Chair, Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA); and Steve H. Taylor, Director, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

The scoop: “Nationally, more than 5,000 tigers are kept as pets and in roadside menageries – more than exist in the wild.  The trade in exotic animals is a multi-billion dollar industry. The issue of dangerous exotic pets in Ohio came to a troubling climax last fall, garnering international media attention as a Zanesville man tragically released his exotic pets before taking his own life.

“A community came to a halt, schools were closed and local law enforcement turned their full attention to protecting residents. Citizens were stunned by the staggering size of the problem, and many are surprised that Ohio lacks statewide regulations banning casual ownership of lions, tigers, bears, primates, crocodiles and large constricting or venomous snakes. Public safety, public health and animal welfare are all at stake, as is Ohio’s national reputation. As the debate about exotic animal legislation takes shape and heats up, learn about the issues with a panel of experts.”
