Science Cafe: Does the US export eating disorders?

Mon 7/12 @ 6:30PM

Science hits the streets every month via Science Cafe Cleveland, a series of informal gatherings about cool sci topics. For July, you’ll be asked: “Does the U.S. export eating disorders along with Coca-Cola and McDonald’s?” Eileen Anderson-Fye, Ed.D. [pictured] and Lisa Damour, Ph.D. will discuss the Americanization of eating disorders.

Questions to be discussed…

What socioeconomic conditions need to occur for eating disorders to emerge in a society?  What are the socio-cultural risk factors for eating disorders within a society?  How varied are body image ideals around the world, and what macro-structural factors are they dependent on? What is going on regarding males and an emergent worldwide trend toward muscular body ideals and muscularity in addition to the thin body ideal for females?  How does migration place individuals at risk for body image and eating problems?  What are the implications of these global trends back in the U.S.?

Interesting stuff.
