Sun 7/11 @ 4 – 6PM
Community gardens are our future and, thankfully, Cleveland seems to be embracing them. Garden 44 Community Garden in Ohio City is celebrating its grand opening on Sun 7/11. Take a garden tour, grab some refreshments and learn about this fully collaborative garden and its future.
A little history and info:
In 2008, a group of neighbors came together to work on a project and when it was finished, they decided to continue working together and to turn a vacant lot at the end of the street into a community garden.
With the help of Councilman Joe Cimperrman, the property was re-zoned for urban agriculture. That is when the fun began…
What makes Garden 44 unique is not just its design, which is an x path running through the garden and three main beds, with a recreation area in the last triangle, but it is organized as a collaborative. All members are responsible for weeding and maintaining the garden with a commitment of one hour a week, and all share in the bounty. In addition, the wood to build the chicken coop is reclaimed wood from demolished homes in Cleveland. A garden diary is being kept to track the successful growing of this year’s crop and organic gardening practices are a priority.
Garden located at the corner of W.44th and Terret, just south of Franklin Blvd.
