SmartHome Cleveland coming to CMNH

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History plans to build SmartHome Cleveland, a house representing the future of energy-efficient housing. SmartHouse will be constructed on the Museum’s grounds in conjunction with the timely exhibit Climate Change, on display this summer.

About SmartHome Cle:

Designed to function without a furnace, SmartHome Cleveland will be 90 percent more energy efficient than a typical home. It will be constructed using sustainable materials and furnishings, advanced stormwater techniques, healthy housing techniques and biophilic design to connect occupants to nature. Three key elements distinguish “passive house” structures from typical houses: high levels of insulation, with walls up to 18 inches thick; a carefully sealed building envelope with minimal air leakage combined with efficient heat-recovery ventilation for superior indoor air quality; and ultra high-performance windows—at least double-paned and typically triple-paned. The result is a home with no drafts, no cold spots and extremely low heating bills.

This could be the home of the future!

Cleveland Public Library to become official Downtown Destination

Cleveland Public Library wants to be a place that attracts residents, tourists, downtown workers and visitors. CPL has launched its Downtown Destination Campaign to reposition its Main Library as a center of activity and learning in the 21st century. The first phase is to consolidate public access computers into Tech Central.

CPL’s revitalization includes several phases of development, including:

• The lower level of the Louis Stokes Wing of the Main Library will become “Tech Central,” where patrons and visitors will find all of the library’s computers and latest technologies in one central space, with expert staff on hand to help patrons make the most of technology.

• All of the popular collections, CDs, and foreign literature will relocate to the first floor. Brett Hall will become the heart of the transformation with new displays that highlight the rare and special collections that have made the library a popular destination for people throughout the world. It will also become active space for community events.

• A new indoor garden, like the popular Eastman Garden outside, becomes a new addition on the first floor flanked by the gift shop and space for tech instruction.

While the first phase, Tech Central, gets under way, CPL will continue to raise support for the other dramatic improvements to the library. The Downtown Destination Campaign will also focus on creating “Centers” for family and children’s discovery, sports research, and career connections.

CPL’s Downtown Destination Campaign will give downtown visitors a place to explore, relax, read, connect to the world, see a new exhibit, attend a special event, and so much more. It will connect an admired historic building to the exciting work of the Group Plan Commission, which is actively engaged in uniting $1.5 billion of downtown development into a seamless, interconnected array of attractions.

Wine on the Rocks benefit @ Market Avenue Wine Bar

Sat 1/29 @ 7PM

A local family created a foundation called Eleonore Rocks in honor of their daughter who they lost three weeks after birth due to a congenital heart problem. Elenore’s mom, Rochelle, said her most precious moments with her daughter were spent rocking in a rocking chair in the hospital.

In Eleonore’s spirit, Rochelle and husband David created the foundation to donate rocking chairs to local hospitals. They’re hosting Wine on the Rocks on Sat 1/29 to raise money for more chairs. Join together for a wine tasting, heavy appetizers and select desserts plus a silent auction.

Coverage: The Songs of Charlie Mosbrook CD Release Party @ Grog Shop

Thu 1/27 @ 8PM

Be at the Grog Shop on Thu 1/27 for the official CD release of Coverage, a musical collaborative featuring Cle’s brightest musicians playing the songs of Charlie Mosbrook, leader of the Cle coffeehouse scene. Featured musicians include: Carlos Jones, Hal Walker, Alan Grandy, Xela, Rob Covert, Rob Loss, Nicky English, Morgan Mecaskey of Tinamou, Andy Cohen, Matt Harmon, Charlie Mosbrook, John McGrail, Jay Bentoff, Linda and Kevin Roy of Jehova Waitresses, Avin Baird, Tim Brennan, Aaron C Smith, Becca Bessinger, Erika Carey, GEN-ERIC, Larkin Bryant, Alice Moss, Dave Michelson.

About Charlie and Coverage:

For more than 20 years Charlie Mosbrook has led the success and growth of coffeehouse entertainment in the Cleveland area. By 1988, Charlie began to develop open mics and acoustic showcases which have become known for attracting the best new performers and often include the biggest acts around town. The success of these shows has been built on simplicity, inclusiveness, and the goal of building community through music. The strength of his longevity is owed to his personal commitment to an ongoing environment of creativity, learning, and entertainment.

As a musician and songwriter, the admiration of his peers is best explained through this collection of his songs, performed by some of the best musicians in the area, providing us a glimpse of the rich musical culture and diversity that has fueled his dedication to his craft. According to Eric Schneider, an Associate Producer for Coverage, “Participating in producing an eclectic mix of folk, jazz, Caribbean, rock, and electronic music with some of the most well known musicians in Cleveland to support and celebrate Charlie’s work has been like watching a piece of Cleveland music history come together.”

At the time this project was conceived Charlie suffered a spinal cord injury, receiving surgery and acute physical therapy. Six days after his discharge from the hospital, using crutches and still wearing a cervical collar, he returned to his role as open mic host. These original recordings remain unified in Charlie’s message of community, hope, and perseverance over adversity. The Coverage CD is a tribute to his commitment and music.

You can purchase the CD at all Phoenix Coffee locations.

CD REVIEW: Unplugged @ Uncorked by David Ullman

CD REVIEW: Unplugged @ Uncorked
David Ullman

Unplugged @ Uncorked brings you the fourth release from Cleveland’s own David Ullman. A series of live recordings taken from Akron’s Uncorked, this album takes listeners directly to the intimate surroundings of the wine bar and into the entire live experience, with vocals and pre/post song conversation present. Perfect practice if you plan on attending his performance this Fri 1/28 at Arts Collinwood Cafe.

Ullman clearly has talent. Live cuts can’t keep secrets, and these tracks reveal honest vocals and a clear voice. Unplugged @ Uncorked is an acoustic rendition of Ullman’s highs and lows in love, even breaking into a bitter spell against all the schmoozers and schmucks with “Mullet Man.” Sticking to acoustic rock with a slight stray towards folk, it is easy, anytime listening.

The album includes three covers – U2, Jewel, and Swell Seasons – and seven original songs. As it is a live recording, the album offers dialogue from Ullman and the crowd with reasoning behind his song choice and writing process. The songs are just Ullman and his guitar, giving off the coffee shop atmosphere and visions of a fireplace and hot chocolate. Instrumentally, the guitar pieces are relatively simple, yet well done, accenting the vocals as well as subject matter.

There are smatterings of canned phrases – “give you an inch and you take a mile,” “I know kindness is contagious, but come on be courageous,” or “forever and a day” – that occasionally take away from the overall feel of the song, as the phrases have been heard enough to lose meaning. Each song revolves around love and relationships, yet some are difficult to get the emotion out of outside vocals and tone. The lyrics can get carried away within the song and lose meaning.

Unplugged @ Uncorked is an album offering rich flavors with soothing overtones.

Unplugged @ Uncorked is available this week for free download on Ullman’s site: http://DavidUllman.net. He does his best to accommodate your schedule and will be playing a 9PM show at The Arts Collinwood Cafe this Fri 1/28, as well as monthly shows on every fourth Friday. He is also a staple performer at Phoenix Coffee and the Barking Spider Tavern.

Laurie Wanninger is a Cleveland convert, having lived in Pittsburgh for 20 years. After attending John Carroll University, she was sold on the city and now lives, works and breathes Cleveland. AUDIO: A Conversation With Marvin Hamlisch

AUDIO: A Conversation with Marvin Hamlisch
Performing With CIM Orchestra at Severance Hall 1/29

Child prodigy Marvin Hamlisch started picking out tunes he heard off the radio at the age of 5. His father, a Viennese accordionist and bandleader filled the house with music and one critical piece of hardware: a piano. Young Marvin started playing those radio tunes on the piano and never turned back. By age seven, he was studying at a division of the Julliard School, he became Barbara Streisand’s rehearsal pianist for Funny Girl, and then started composing a remarkable streak of hit tunes and film scores, winning 3 Oscars in 1973, only the second person to do so, and achieving the “Grand Slam”" of winning Oscar (3), Emmy (4), Grammy (4) and Tony (1) awards. Plus a Pulitzer Prize.

The Cleveland Institute of Music’s benefit One Singular Sensation on Sat 1/29 at Severance Hall will feature Marvin Hamlisch conducting the CIM Orchestra and select CIM vocalists presenting Broadway tunes and the Hamlisch songbook. Get tickets here. Cool Cleveland spoke with Mr. Hamlisch about the importance of childhood arts and music education, and about his fabulous career in film and pop music composition. Listen in on the call here.

On Fri 1/28 at 1PM in CIM’s Mixon Hall, Marvin Hamlisch will coach CIM students in a master class that is free and open to the public. These students will then perform with Mr. Hamlisch and the CIM Orchestra in the Sat 1/29 performance at Severance Hall. For details, call 216-791-5000 X225.
