Yes, Fred Astaire was a great dancer. But how did he become a cul­tural icon? Why did that small, thin voice of his attract the finest song­writ­ers of his era, includ­ing the Gersh­win broth­ers, Irv­ing Berlin and Cole Porter?  And what was it about the top hat, white tie and tails that cap­ti­vated Amer­i­cans, mak­ing him a major influ­ence on artists rang­ing from Bobby Short to Michael Jack­son? We’ll explore these and other fas­ci­nat­ing ques­tions, and per­form 30 of the songs Astaire intro­duced includ­ing “S’Wonderful,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “A Foggy Day” and “They Can’t Take That Away from Me.”
