Listen to the Exclusive Interview

Sat 7/16 @ 6PM

Cleveland native Mark O’Donnell, Tony award winner for writing the Broadway play Hairspray, returns to his roots (he once acted in Our Town at Lakewood Little Theatre, before their name change) to kick off the inaugural event for the Beck Center’s new group, Connect to Beck, (C2B) helping to introduce people in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s to Beck Center through social, cultural and insider events. O’Donnell will speak at 6PM on Sat 7/16, and C2B members will meet-and-greet, have drinks and apps, and then attend the 8PM presentation of Hairspray on the Mackey Main Stage at the Beck Center.

Listen to this exclusive interview with Mark O’Donnell about growing up on the West Side of Cleveland with 10 brothers and sisters, then graduating to Harvard University, the Harvard Lampoon, National Lampoon, and Saturday Night Live, which led to his work with John Waters on the Broadway adaptations of his films Hairspray and Cry-Baby, making him one of the pioneers of a fresh comedic style still popular today. He also talks about his work as a writer, with 5 books, 2 humor collections, and his poetry, cartoons and humor being published by the likes of The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and McSweeney’s. In photo at left, Mark O’Donnell is surrounded by Hairspray producer Margo Lion and Bruce Vilanch as Edna Turnblad. For info on Connect to Beck, contact C2B@BeckCenter.org, or BeckCenter.org.
