Original Art for Original You
Get it @ Cain Park Arts Festival
If you’ve never experienced the Cain Park Arts Festival, you’re in for a treat. Go this weekend (Fri 7/8 – Sun 7/10) and find juried art from more than 150 artists. See watercolors, sculpture, wood, leather, glass, two dimensional art, jewelry and photography that cannot be seen elsewhere. Imagine original art on your walls, tables, shelves, and front porch.
Cain Park, located on 22 acres of municipal property in Cleveland Heights, is an enclave for Cleveland arts events, including theater, dance, and other performance arts on its outside covered stage and art in its gallery. The Cain Park Arts Festival has been a Cleveland tradition for many years and is sponsored by area arts associations. The artists are chosen from hundreds of entries.
According to Ksenia Roshchakovsky, Cain Park Public Relations/Marketing, one way the festival has changed over the years is to increase in size from 120 to 150 artists. “Art stretches from the Lee Road entrance to the Alma Theater; and from outside the Main Ticket Office to the wading pool,” Roshchakovsky says. “The festival is now allowing giclees to be sold from artist booths.” She went on to explain that giclees are individually produced, high resolution and high fidelity reproductions on large-format printers. This addition lends a new dynamic to the festival.
First timers should know that food and drink complete the experience of a day of art in the park. Pearl of the Orient, the Mad Greek, and Raintree are among the food vendors. The Meadow Maid grassfed organic grilled cheese sandwich is going to be better than the white bread and American cheese sandwiches hot off the griddle at your Mom’s house. You can buy beer, wine, and hard lemonade, as well as non-alcoholic drinks to accompany the food, and relax. Restaurant-quality food satisfies the craving for something new while the stage at Cain Park lights up with the best music and theater in Cleveland.
During the Festival, you’ll be entertained by The Lenny Russo Band, the Girls Band, Lost State of Franklin, Terrance Simien, and Bill Metsumoto & Rick Smith, Jr. Lost State of Franklin, with original music written by Scott Franklin (nominated as Scene Magazine’s songwriter of the year) plays an array of music with sounds whose roots range from bluegrass to jazz.
Start your festival experience by parking at Cleveland Heights City Hall, 40 Severance Circle, and taking the free shuttle service on Lolly the Trolley to and from the entrance. Baby strollers and wheelchairs are allowed, but don’t take anything else on wheels. Admission is free on Friday and $5 a person for those 13 and older on Saturday and Sunday; kids under 13 get free admission all weekend long.
If you can’t make it to the Festival, take advantage of the GroundWorks DanceTheater performance on Fri 7/15 or Inlet Dance Theatre on Thu 7/28 at Cain Park’s Alma Theater. Or find folk music again with Arlo Guthrie on Fri 7/29. Be outside in the city with art, whether it’s at the Cain Park Arts Festival or one of the scheduled performances.
Cain Park Art Festival is at 14591 Superior Road, Cleveland Heights and runs Fri 7/8 through Sun 7/10. http://www.CainPark.com.

There is a fine line between original art and entrepreneurialism. Because proponents of each are generally on opposite sides of the political spectrum, people think they are different. In reality, a creative mind can see what it wants to create and talent and practice allow those dreams to come to fruition for all to see. Creativity is integral to remaking Cleveland into a vibrant center of cutting edge thought and innovation.

I’m a very proud owner (and gift giver) of a few of the pieces by the artists whose work you featured (Copper Leaf Studios). Visitors to Cain Park should definitely take time to stop by her booth and check out her stunning work!
