Concerned Lakewoodites will hold a demonstration to protest the building of a McDonald’s at the site of the old Detroit Theatre. Protestors are concerned about many things… namely, the increased safety and traffic issues resulting from a drive-thru fast food joint. Don’t wanna see a McD’s smack-dab in the middle of Lakewood? Unite in protest!
Background info: “Concerned neighbors have spoken against the project at several public forums including meetings of the city’s Architectural Board of Review and Planning Commission. A McDonald’s site plan was approved with conditions by the review board in September. The next step in the process requires approval by the Lakewood Planning Commission. After hearing comments from both sides at a meeting last month, the commission postponed a decision on the project until their next meeting on November 3. The citizens’ group hopes to gather additional public support and increase community involvement at the meeting this week. They plan to stage another protest prior to the 7 p.m. meeting on Thursday outside of Lakewood City Hall at 12650 Detroit Avenue.”

One Response to “McDonald’s – They’re Not Lovin’ It”

Because of the drive-thru…This will only attract transient traffic for the most part; those who will drive through, eat in the car, and then pitch their rubbish out of the car window. McDonald’s is the most prevalent component of fast food litter. Just take a look around and take note to how many times you see wadded up McD’s trash pitched along curbs, sidewalks, and in treelawns or parking lots. It is undeniable.
And, perhaps maybe this has something to do with the direction McD’s has decided to steer most of their marketing for so long now…and that is….is that so much of McD’s marketing is directed at inner city culture/low income/poor education folks these days… and it is mostly those who belong to such demographics who will be doing the littering. To deny this is to not fess up to the truth and reality of this situation.
Furthermore, all McD’s has done is be a big part of the contribution…a part in the cycle that has fostered the most unhealthy generation we have ever known. I would care less if this place and other fat pits fell off the face of the earth. We’d get along just fine. Their corporate marketing schemes and guilt contributions that make them look like pillar and upstanding members of the community and a credit to the human race is even more laughable and downright deception at its best/worst! To top it all, so many people actually believe it!
McD’s in Lakewood’s center… watch the tell tale signs of crap that follow and a lot of of the element it will attract. Maybe if their marketing would stop glamorizing stupid, such would not be the case. This is an insult to the history of Detroit Avenue and sets a negative “If they can do it why can’t we?” precedent. City fathers need to be mindful and thoughtful and think for the long term for all and about repercussions…as leaders should–And not for short term minor gains for a few.
