Grist: How ruin porn can help rebuild the Rust Belt

Grist recently picked up a story that originally ran in RustWire, titled “Things Are Broke. Can Ruin Porn Fix It?”, in which Cleveland writer Richard Piiparinen made the case for “ruin porn” as an agent for change. Ruin porn — photography of abandoned, decayed buildings — has been called many things, from condescending to the Rust Belt to something cool to look at. But Piiparinen thinks it can be a useful tool. Ruin porn takes what people don’t want to think about (the nation’s state of decay) and puts it front and center for people to see, discuss and, hopefully, do something about.
