Have you seen Cleveland’s Plan for Transforming Schools? It’s an audacious plan offered by the quiet, unassuming Mayor of Cleveland, Frank Jackson, that should open eyes, and includes ideas such as:
* Early Childhood Academies with year-round preschool to third grade loop
* An Environmental Science School that connects students to Lake Erie and the CVNP
* A Global Language Academy immersing students in languages such as Chinese and Arabic
* Every neighborhood has a multitude of great schools to choose from
* A Residential Boarding School where students live 5-7 days/wk.
* An English Immersion School for Spanish-speaking and other ESL students
* Career Technical Academies to ensure career and college readiness
* An Urban Cooperative School with a holistic live-learn-work environment
Creating the conditions for success will require necessary changes in state policy, a fresh start in labor-management agreements, and a financial sustainability plan.
