Why Can’t Cleveland Brand Itself?

What’s Wrong With “Cleveland Rocks?” Or “Cool Cleveland” for that matter?

In an interesting article tracing the history of Cleveland brands going back to “The Best Location In The Nation,” to “Cleveland’s A Plum,” all the way through “Cleveland Plus” and the resurgence of more authentic brands such as “Cleveland: You Gotta Be Tough,” RustWire talks about the difference between being real and trying to be real.

We’d also like to remember (or forget) the well-intentioned but ultimately failed effort, “Believe In Cleveland;” unsuccessful on it’s face because, of course, it assumes that we don’t already believe.

That’s never been one of Cool Cleveland’s problems. Now in our 10th year, we’ve always proudly and matter-of-factly showcased all the cool things that Cleveland already has going for it. We think “Cool Cleveland” would make a darn good brand for our region.

As would “Cleveland Rocks!” for that matter. Not just a marketing tag for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (although why not, with 700,000 people visiting our region each year just to visit that museum), this authentic rallying cry was born from songwriter Ian Hunter’s frustration with the national media’s historic disrespect of Cleveland (See Cool Cleveland video interview here). More being than trying, this authentic brand is durable, authentic and flexible enough to be used by everyone in the region.
