When I listen to Cleveland’s Pleasure Leftists, I feel like I heard them at New York’s Danceteria in the early ’80s opening up to someone like The Teardrop Explodes or very, very early U2.
Their music’s urgent new wave drone is the perfect match for tiny Haley Morris’ howling vocals that can evoke the plaintive bleat of Teardrop’s Julian Cope coupled with Patti Smith’s cliff-diving abandon. On Thu 1/31, they’ll be sharing the stage at the Happy Dog with Cleveland’s Murdered Man and ragged Chicago rockers Outside World.
