Myron Avant is a Cleveland Metropolitan School District success story. Better known to the world simply as Avant, he was just a few years out of Cleveland’s School of the Arts when he released his debut album, My Thoughts, in 2000. It went platinum and spawned the R&B #1 track ‘Separated.’
Since then, he’s released five more albums and a greatest hits compilation, and recorded with Diddy, Nicole Scherzinger & the Pussycat Dolls, Lloyd Banks, and Lil Wayne among others. Like fellow Clevelander the late Gerald Levert, he’s got that pure, emotion-drenched style that makes women’s hearts flutter across all eras, calling on timeless influences like Marvin Gaye, Frankie Beverly, Smokey Robinson, and Luther Vandross. When he sings a line like ‘I want to be where you are’ on his new single ‘You & I,’ the words seem to float from his vocal chords.
Avant’s seventh album, Face the Music, is out this week, just in time for his appearance at the House of Blues. Tickets are $22 in advance, $25 at the door.
