Theatrical productions depicting the lives and careers of legendary musicians — from Janis Joplin to Billie Holiday to Buddy Holly — always pack ’em in. That’s why shows they keep cropping on the season schedule of any theater with an actor capable of handing the lead.
Over a decade ago, actress-singer Miche Braden collaborated with playwright Angelo Parra and director Joe Brancato to create The Devil’s Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith. She’s played the role in many cities and won praise for her depiction of the woman who created the mold for the blunt-talking, hard-living, raw-belting female blues singer back in the ’20s. Braden is bringing the well-seasoned production to the Cleveland Play House’s Allen Theater for a month-long run through March 10.
