You say you want musical diversity? You’ve got it tonight at Mahall’s in Lakewood. Two local bands and two artists from the Washington D.C. area run the gamut of musical styles and influences.
There’s the three-woman ska band the Scotch Bonnets from the Baltimore area. There’s Obnox, the side project from This Moment in Black History drummer Lamont “Bim” Thomas, making low-fi, garage-y noise on guitar and vocals. There’s the blues-drenched jazz/soul of R.A. Washington and the Family Dollar who delivered a powerful set at last September’s WRUW-FM Studio-A-Rama.
And last but not least there’s HR, who rose to fame (or notoriety, depending on how you look at it) with Washington D.C.-based Bad Brains in the ’80, when the band was considered a hardcore pioneer. Later they were one of the first bands to bring reggae and funk influences into the punk/hardcore scene, and it’s the reggae side HR has explored most prominently as a solo artist. Admission is $6.
