The Cleveland Print Room celebrated the grand opening of their community darkroom with a burst of creative enthusiasm!

The public was warmly welcomed in to tour the efficient darkroom and create their own Rayogram prints with items squirreled away in their pockets. After thoughtful arrangement of treasures and a quick exposure to the photo paper, the print moved from bath to bath of chemicals ending in a “swirl,” all in the dark. Once in the light again, the print was carefully squeegee-d, blown dry, admired and toasted. It was the perfect way to give the darkroom experience regardless of a person’s knowledge or previous experience. It was pure fun and a joyful creative moment for everyone.

It was also a thrill to enjoy Vaughn Wascovich’s series “Welcome to Hard Times” that was on display in the gallery. Vaughn’s images are currently hanging at the Transformer Station too and they are truly impressive. His work is perfectly suited to assist in celebrating the goal of this lovely creative pocket of the analog world.

Everything here welcomes you, the warm worn floors and inviting smiles of the staff and volunteers. They are doing a great service in supporting Cleveland’s artist community; I hope they get the same or greater support in return.

What is a Rayogram?
“The name originates with acclaimed American artist Man Ray who innovated the ‘rayogram’ – an image created by placing an object directly on a piece of photographic paper and exposing it to light to capture its impression.”
