REVIEW: Take The Kids to See “Avenue Q” at The Beck

And by kids we mean teens 12-19, which is the age of the cast in this lively, energetic and non-stop romp through adolescent angst. There’s a reason this show won the Tony “Triple Crown” for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. And let’s add Best Teen Production Around Here in a Helluva Long Time. It’s running through Sun 2/17.

Sure, they’re dealing with tricky issues like homosexuality (“If You Were Gay”), racism (“A Little Bit Racist”), inappropriateness (“I’m Not Wearing Any Underwear Today”), online behavior (“My Social Life Is Online”), and the distasteful appeal of Schadenfreude (“Schadenfreude”). And because of the delightful script and the incredible production of the Beck Center for the Arts Teen Theatre, these themes are explored with humor, care, and yes, tastefulness. And it’s nothing your teen hasn’t already seen on network TV shows like “Glee.” Let alone anything on the CW.

Plus, the show digs deeper, anchored with an examination of the issues really bugging young adults: what is my purpose in life (“Purpose”), how can I begin to act on my dreams (“Fantasies Come True”), and how the hell am I going to make a living now that I’m on my own (“What Do You Do With a B.A. In English?” “I Wish I Could Go Back To College” “The Money Song”).

So, no spoilers here. You’ll have to see the show for yourself. Be entertained by standouts Carleigh Spence as Kate Monster and Anthony Heffner as Princeton (and an outstanding supporting cast), by the muppet puppet work, and the live groove from the pit orchestra led by Ian A. LeRoy on keyboard.

Then come back to Cool Cleveland and thank us for recommending it.
