While the opposition to marriage equality frequently cites religious grounds, many churches make a point of emphasizing that they welcome everybody. One of those is the University Circle United Methodist Church whose slogan is “Where all are welcome all the time.”
But its support for equality isn’t merely passive. It also sponsors a fundraiser for the national LGBT rights group the Human Rights Campaign, whose familiar square blue logo with two yellow bars was appropriated for the increasingly familiar red marriage equality meme that has spread online.
Jazz in the Heights for Human Rights, taking place at Nighttown, features an ensemble called Blue Note City founded by sax player David Kay. Trumpeter Christopher Scott, keyboard player Joey Skoch, bassist Chris Vance, vocalist Nathan Motta, and percussionist Chad Komocki will join him to play music by jazz notables like Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter, and Michael Brecker, as well as what they refer to as “a provocative setting of ‘War Pigs’ by Black Sabbath.”
Tickets are $30 and should be ordered in advance from the church, by calling 216-421-1200 or going to their website.
