The death of “Queen of the Blues” Koko Taylor in 2009 left a vacant throne, aching to be filled. Luckily, young Shemekia Copeland was ready. The 33-year-old singer — daughter of Texas blues guitarist and singer Johnny Copeland — had been priming her pipes for the job since she released her debut album, Turn Up the Heat!, in 1998 when she was still a teenager. She’s grown in depth and confidence, with five more albums added to her catalog.
The latest, 33 1/3, on Cleveland’s Telarc label, was released last fall. The album features a guitar solo from one of her father’s contemporaries, Buddy Guy and one of her father’s songs “One More Time.” And Northeast Ohio music completists will want to know that the bass player on the album is Ted Pecchio, son of Glass Harp/Michael Stanley Band bassist Dan Pecchio. Copeland is at the Winchester with a four-piece backup band that is sure to rock as hard as she sings. Tickets are $25.
