Akron area musician Ryan Humbert isn’t just a talented player and songwriter with several albums out under his own name, including last year’s Sometimes The Game Plays You. He’s also an instigator, an organizer, and a fount of musical ideas.
He’s put together a number of special evenings of music, drawing on the talents of his many musician-friends. He’s paid tribute to Roy Orbison and Hank Williams, and done shows with string quartets.
His latest event-type show is This Land Is Your Land: The Legacy of Woody Guthrie and American Folk Music, taking place in a cabaret-style setting on the stage of the Akron Civic Theatre.
Humbert and his friends — Emily Bates, Mary Kettering, Benjamin Payne, and Erin Vaughn — will perform an intimate, all-acoustic show of Guthrie classics.
The ensemble will be switching around on banjo, fiddle, guitars, mandolin and other instruments as they perform songs like “1913 Massacre, “Do-Re-Mi,” “Plane Wreck at Los Gatos,” and “Union Maid.” The set will also include tunes from the Billy Bragg/Wilco album Mermaid Avenue, which set to music Guthrie lyrics he’d never gotten around to turning into songs.
Tickets are $25, or $40 for a “date night” special that includes two admissions and two drink tickets.
