Bill Frisell is known as one of jazz’s most adventurous guitarists. His genre explorations have covered the entire musical waterfront.
His latest project, Bill Frisell’s Beautiful Dreamers, with Eyvind Kang on viola and Rudy Royston on drums, explores veins of American popular and vernacular music going back to the 19th century.
The unusual instrumentation and Frisell’s own encyclopedic tonal range transform tunes like Stephen Foster’s “Beautiful Dreamer,” from which the group takes its name. It appears on the group’s 2010 album, alongside tunes Benny Goodman and Blind Willie Johnson tunes, and a batch by Frisell himself, whose compositional interests are as varied as his guitar playing.
The group performs at the Allen Theatre as part of Tri-C JazzFest. Tickets are $30.
