Funk Legend Brings Ensemble to the Beachland

Wed 4/17 @ 9PM

Few people have the funk credentials of keyboard player Bernie Worrell. He was in on the ground floor of Parliament-Funkadelic, when the group was making the transition from the more traditional sounds of the Parliaments in the early ’70s. His distinctive synth lines were a key element in that cutting edge R&B sound that became funk.

Since then, Worrell has released solo albums and collaborated with a multitude of other artists, mostly those with the same adventurous musical mindset.

Since 2011, he has been touring with the Bernie Worrell Orchestra, an eight-piece ensemble with a horn section. They’re at the Beachland Ballroom where they’ll perform selections from the BWO’s album of jazz standards as well as some of the funk hits Worrell was involved in creating.

Chris Hatton & the Italian Sound Machine open; DJs Charles McGaw & Darrick Grant will spin between band.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.
