There’s an old saying popularized by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
As far as acceptance of LGBT people, that arc is compressing rapidly. That’s the case in Ohio, where marriage equality is likely to be on the ballot this year or next.
But for many LGBT high school kids, acceptance — both self and peer — can be hard to come by. They desperately need people to tell them “You’re as normal as anyone else.”
That’s the mission behind the first Stand Up & Reach Out event, taking place at the Lakewood Public Library Auditorium — to help those kids connect with resources and supportive people.
It was put together by Strongsville student Savannah Sherman and Fighting Chance Records — local singer/guitarist/songwriter Diana Chittester and her partner Jessica Rosenblatt. It’ll feature speakers like state representative Nickie Antonio of Lakewood, Ohio’s first openly gay legislator. Chittester will speak about the challenges of growing up in a religious home.
There will be food and refreshments. There is a suggested donation of $5, which will go to support the work of Cleveland’s PFLAG chapter.
