Texas gives the rest of the country terrible politicians, wonderful songwriters, and interesting bands.
One of the latter is nine-year-old psychedelic rockers the Black Angels, who call their music “Native American Drone ’N’ Roll.” Their music combines hypnotic grooves and drones with dislocating shifts of musical scenery.
The Black Angels follow in the footsteps of pioneering Texas psych bands from the ’60s like Moving Sidewalks and fellow Austinites the 13th Floor Elevators. (A few years ago, they even did a stint as backing band for 13th Floor Elevators’ Roky Erickson). The band’s devotion to carrying the banner of psych rock extends to organizing its own annual festival, the Austin Psych Fest, taking place this year April 26-28.
Before then, the band’s hitting the road to spread the word about its newly release fourth album, Indigo Meadow. That tour brings them to the Beachland Ballroom tonight, along with similarly-minded bands the Allah-las and Elephant Stone, a sort of mini-psych festival. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door.
