A sold-out crowd filled the ballroom of the Intercontinental Hotel in Cleveland Sunday evening April 14 when U.S. House minority leader Nancy Pelosi headlined an upbeat evening focused on winning state elections in 2014.
She focused on three topics she said were crucial: closing the income gap between the ultra-wealthy and ordinary middle-class workers, providing educational opportunities for all, and getting money out of elections.
Both of the county’s Democratic congresspersons — Marcia Fudge and Marcy Kaptur — spoke, along with Senator Sherrod Brown and Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, who spoke so briefly (as usual) that someone near me complained she’d been unable to get a picture because he was done by the time she got her camera ready.
The crowd also heard from County Executive Ed FitzGerald, the likely Democratic candidate for governor next year, and State Senator Nina Turner, whose not “officially” running for secretary of state yet, but made what sounded like a campaign speech, calling out SoS Jon Husted for the voter suppression tactics he spearheaded last year. (The fact that her husband was clutching a “Run Nina Run” sign did nothing to dispel the idea that she’s definitely in this race).
Two other statewide candidates, both from the Cincinnati area, were in the house too: David Pepper, who officially announced his run for attorney general the following day, and state rep. Connie Pillich, who is already making fundraising calls for what’s sure to be an expensive race against state treasurer Josh “The Empty Suit” Mandel.
Everyone who is anyone in Cuyahoga County Democratic politics was there. Here are just a few of them.

Pretty ironic that Mrs Pelosi is calling for getting money out of elections at a pay-per-plate dinner event where tickets cost $200 – $5000.
