Pop Music Scholars to Gather at Rock Hall

Fri 4/19 @ 10AM

Sat 4/20 @ 10:15AM

When Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen opened his Frank Gehry-designed Experience Music Project in Seattle in 2000, there was a lot of talk about whether it would compete with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland.

Both institutions have gone through changes since then. The Seattle museum is now the EMP Museum and includes a science fiction component. The Rock Hall at long last has acquired a library and archives.

So maybe it’s fitting that the EMP Pop Conference, which started in Seattle in 2002 before moving to Los Angeles in 2011 and New York in 2012, has ended up at the Rock Hall — one of five locations sponsoring conference-related events this weekend.

Each location (New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Seattle and Cleveland) is tackling a different theme. Cleveland’s is “Curating the Pop Soundscape” where “Conference attendees will explore how listeners, performers, music industry professionals, scholars, and aficionados evaluate and select from the fluid soundscapes of pop music as it comes apart at the seams.”

Friday’s events include a forum on collecting and preserving materials, and a tour of the Rock Hall Library and Archives.

Saturday’s schedule features five forums from 10:15 am to 5:30 with topics ranging from the academic and theoretical to things as basic as how to build an audience for your venue. At 7:30 pm Brill Building songwriter Beverly Ross will speak.

The conference is free and open at all but space is limited and you must register. Go here.
