Roberto Ocasio Legacy Goes On in Latin Jazz Camp

Mon 5/13 @ 7PM

The late Roberto Ocasio’s friends and colleagues have worked hard to assure that his legacy lives on — and on and on.

After the Latin jazz pianist, singer, and educator died in an auto accident in January 2004, they sprang into action. They started the Roberto Ocasio Foundation, which sponsors the Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Camp for young musicians grade 8-12 of all musical skill levels. Now in its ninth year, it takes place this year July 7-12 at Cleveland State University

One of the most dedicated friends is New York-based percussionist Bobby Sanabria, who knew Ocasio from their days at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Sanabria has been artist in residence at the camp since its inception  (He’ll be there again this year).

He’s also coming to town for a benefit to provide camp scholarships so kids from all economic situations can participate. He’ll join local jazz stars pianist Jackie Warren, bassist Peter Dominguez, and sax player Brad Wagner at Nighttown for what they’re billing as “an incredible 90-minute show of energy and imagination.”

Admission is $25. Students get a 50% discount. For more information about the benefit and the camp, go to the foundation’s website.
