Tri-C JazzFest Honors Dexter Gordon

Sun 4/21 @ 7 & 9PM

Dexter Gordon, who died in 1990 at the age of 67, is considered one of jazz’s most influential tenor sax players. He began his career in the early ’40s, playing with legends like Lionel Hampton, Louis Armstrong, and Billy Eckstine before becoming a legend himself.

As part of Tri-C Jazzfest, Nighttown will host Dexter@90, which pays tribute to Gordon in what would have been his 91st year. Noted younger tenor sax player Javon Jackson, who has played with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Betty Carter, Donald Byrd, and Elvin Jones, will led the Tri-C Jazz Works Ensemble — trombonist Chris Anderson, saxophonist Howie Smith, saxophonist John Klayman, guitarist Bob Fraser, and bassist Glenn Holmes — in a program of Gordon’s music.

From 6-7 pm, there will be a short film and a chat with Gordon’s widow Maxine. Tickets are $20.
