Folk & Jazz on Tap Monday Night at the Barking Spider

Mon 6/3 @ 8PM

You never know who is going to turn up at the Barking Spider although you can be sure it won’t be a tribute band or a frat-rock cover band.  The low-key coachhouse club on the Case Western Reserve campus is open almost every night of the year, with an array of folk, blues, bluegrass, rock, jazz, country, and old-time artists playing its tiny stage area.

This Monday is a typical example of the Spider’s musical offerings. The evening opens at 8 with Rebecca Wohlever, a folk-style singer-songwriter who’s not a regular at clubs around town — and that’s no reflection on the quality of her music.

She decided to pursue her gift and her passion while pregnant with her third child. She’s produced an album, All My Sycamores, of her reflective tunes, which you can sample here. With honeyed voice that flows as easily and naturally as her likable tunes, she’s worh checking out.

Then at 10, veteran Cleveland jazz pianist George Foley, a familiar face both at the Spider and on the local jazz scene, will head over to the baby grand in the corner to regale listeners with some of his vast repertoire. He’s billed as “George Foley and friends,” so expect other accomplished local jazz players to be hanging around.

As usual, there’s no cover. The Spider passes the hat for the musicians and if you like what you hear, you can toss in a few bucks.
