Two Seasoned Sidemen Lead Trio at Nighttown

Tue 6/4 @ 7PM

You may never have heard of guitarist Danny Dreher or drummer Paul Peress — I know I hadn’t before I saw the listing for their Nighttown show with the Denny Draher/Paul Peress Trio. But you’ve heard of many of the artists they’ve worked with.

Dreher, the older of the two, moved to Chicago as a teenager and started his professional career playing with legendary bluesmen like Buddy Guy and Otis Rush. With such a powerful launching pad, he soon ended up in New York and has spent decades playing and recording with artists like Allen Toussaint, Paul Butterfield, Bo Diddley, Dr. John and Etta James, as a sideman, music director, and producer.

Peress has also worked a litany of acts — encompassing blues, jazz, R&B, and rock — including with Tom Scott, Jimmy Heath, Deneice Williams, the B-52, Moby, Brenda Russell, and Mary Wilson of the Supremes. He also leads his own ensemble, the Paul Peress Project, which has played at many major jazz festivals.

While they may not be recognizable names, they’re obviously skilled and versatile musicians. So this might be a great night for young players to take advantage of Nighttown’s student discount — half price admission with student ID. And since admission for this show is only $10, that’s a real bargain to come listen and learn.
