For the 24th year, the Cleveland Orchestra is staging its Star Spangled Spectacular downtown on Public Square, this year on the Monday before the Thursday holiday.
William Eddins will be conducting when the orchestra kicks off its program at 9 pm with The Star Spangled Banner. That will be followed by an assortment of pops-style programming, including music by film composer John Williams, Randy Newman’s Suite from Toy Story, “America the Beautiful,” July 4th staples by Aaron Copland and John Phillip Sousa, and — you knew it was coming! — the 1812 Overture.
WCPN 90.3 FM’s Dee Perry hosts, and soprano Jessica Rivera will be featured.
But the festivities start long before 9 (you’ll want to get down early anyway because traffic will be heavy — take the Rapid if you can). Starting at 5 pm, food trucks will be parked around Public Square and videos of community music makers will be screened.
Of course, the evening ends with fireworks, weather permitting. And best of all, it’s free.
