Larchmere Porchfest came out of conversations among neighbors in this homey, trendy-but-not-too neighborhood just north of Shaker Square.
Someone had heard about a neighborhood music festival in Ithaca, New York where musicians played on people’s porches while listeners sat on the lawn, and thought it was a good fit for the Larchmere area.
It’s now in its fifth year, featuring 30 musical act on 30 different porches on Larchmere and the streets radiating off it. And it’s not all the acoustic folkie types you’d expect: the mix includes blues, indie rock, reggae, experimental music, and klezmer.
This year, the music kicks off at 1 pm with a set by Harmonia featuring Steve Greenberg. After that you’ve got four or five choices in five time slots until the day wraps up with headliners We the People at 6pm and Jah Messengers at 7pm. Don’t worry; maps are provided at the conspicuous information booth so you won’t get lost wandering from porch to porch.
But things don’t end as dusk draws nigh. Several Larchmere bars and eateries are having afterparties: Universal Funk Mob is at Jezebel’s Bayou, Crooked River Blues Band plays at the Academy Tavern, and singer/songwriter Morgan Mecaskey is at Felice Urban Cafe.
It’s all free.
