The PigPen Theatre Co. is doing a concert tour, but it’s not exactly a band – although it is that too.
The group, launched five years ago by seven male students at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon School of Drama, is a multimedia arts project that blends music, film, theater and storytelling.
After graduation in 2011, the group took off en masse for New York where they’ve attracted quite a bit of attention, including lengthy features in the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. Its productions have been mounted at New York’s Fringe Festival and off-Broadway.
Those theatrical pieces are music-driven, and its concerts, like the one it’ll play at the Grog Shop this week, use theatrical elements to create a context for their songs.
Their current concert tour includes tunes from their debut album Bremen, their off-Broadway production The Old Man and the Moon, and a soon-to-be-released EP.
Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door. Two local singer-songwriters, Tom Evanchuck and Corissa Bragg, open.
