Knoxville, Tennessee’s Black Lillies are steeped in old-school country — the music of artists like George Jones and Johnny Cash. These days, with country charts dominated by the slick pop likes of Kenny Chesney and Lady Antebellum, that makes them “alt-country.”
The quintet, fronted by songwriter Cruz Contreras who spent a decade slogging it out on the road with Robinella and the CCstringband before forming the black Lillies in 2009, features Trisha Gene Brady’s harmony vocals, setting up classic George-and-Tammy style duets.
The group’s recently released third album Runaway Freeway Blues reflects the band’s workhorse mentality, the shifting scenery of its professional life, and the input — musical and otherwise — of the many people it’s encountered on the way. Musically it runs the gamut from gentle folk-style tunes to all-out rockers.
The Black Lillies are at the Winchester this week. Tickets are $12.
