Composer Margaret Brouwer’s Chamber Ensemble at Nighttown

Mon 7/15 @ 7PM

Since graduating from Oberlin in 1962, Margaret Brouwer has built a career as an acclaimed and respected contemporary classical composer whose music has been played by the world’s most revered orchestras and ensembles.

Retiring from her teaching position at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 2008 left her time to have some fun with music. One of her projects is the Blue Streak Ensemble, which she launched in 2011, playfully naming it after the classic Cedar Point roller coaster. It’s promoted as “a thrill ride just like every performance.”

With Brouwer conducting and narrating, the versatile chamber group features gifted up-and-coming musicians: pianist Irwin Shung, violinist Jinjoo Cho, cellist Maaike Harding, clarinetist Robert Davis, and singer Sarah Beaty.

This is no vanity project for Brouwer. While the group does play some of her music, they also play pieces by a wide range of classical and jazz performers. For their last-minute booking at Nighttown, they’ll tackle Gershwin, Beethoven, Rossini, Milhaud, and Rachmaninov — and yes, Brouwer.

Tickets are $10.
