Ernie Krivda Presents Tri-C All Star Alumni Group at Nighttown

Wed 7/17 @ 7PM

Community colleges get a bad rap sometimes as being the option for those nor academically prepared for a four-year college or unable to afford a more expensive school.

But when it comes to jazz, Cuyahoga Community College has a stellar program, featuring some of the area’s top musicians on the faculty. One such musician is sax player Ernie Krivda, who continues to be a vital, high-profile part of the area jazz scene after a nearly 50-year career in which he’s attained international recognition.

Krivda has assembled the Tri-C All Star Alumni Group, made up of musicians who have been associated with the college’s jazz program. They include trumpeter Curtis Taylor, pianist Lafayette Carthon, acoustic bass player Jeff Halsey, and drummer Jerome Jennings.

Collectively the four have degrees from Juilliard and Rutgers, been part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center program, worked with acts like Cyrus Chestnut, Dizzy Gillespie, R. Kelly, and the Winans, and released albums as band leaders. Carthon, who is a School of the Arts and Oberlin alum, is currently working for his PhD. Not a bunch to take lightly.

Krivda will be featured on Joe Mosbrook’s Cleveland Jazz History program on WCPN 90.3 FM Monday, July 15 at 10pm to talk about the group and its concert at Nighttown next week.

Tickets are $20.
