Gypsy jazz has enjoyed a resurgence of popularity recently, with even local groups like Hot Djang getting into the game.
Hot Club of Detroit has been building its chops and reputation for a while, since releasing its debut album in 2006. Like other such bands, it’s building on a style of music established by legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli in their short-lied but endlessly influential 1930s ensemble Quintette du Hot Club de France.
This quintet features accordion and sax rather than violin, capturing the mood of the original music rather than slavishly imitating it. The group met in Detroit while studying music in college. Alas, despite their name, like about a million other people, they no longer live there, save for guitarist Evan Perri.
They’ve become hugely popular at Cleveland’s Nighttown, where they’ve played many times. This time, they’ll play two nights, a split gig with shows on Monday and Wednesday.
Tickets are $20.
