The Freedom Jazz Collective is controlled chaos — or maybe not so controlled.
Calling itself “an experiment in mass improvisation,” the large ensemble features members of Cleveland’s jazz, avant-garde, and indie rock scenes.
Here’s how they describe it:
“The musicians are split into three separate sections by their instrument type (horns, drums/percussion, strings/keyboards). Each section has a conductor that introduces musical ‘events’ into the section’s improvisation. These ‘events’ will in turn influence the other sections and the overall sound of the larger mass improvisation. The sections are prepared independently of each other but perform together as one large orchestra for the first time the night of the concert.
Initially performing last October at the AllGoSigns warehouse, from where many off-the-beaten-path creative projects have emerged, they’re now massing for another performance at MOCA. Tenor sax player Dan Wenninger is the conductor, electric bassist John Howitt, double bassist David Mansbach, and drummers Nate Scheible and Jose Luna are co-conductors.
They’ll be joined by more than a dozen other musicians for this event.
It’s free for MOCA members; $10 for nonmembers.
