There isn’t much more to be said about the Temptations, the five-man singing and dancing Motown group who recorded and took to #1 one of the most beautiful love songs of all time, the Smokey Robinson-penned “My Girl.”
That was their first big hit but far from their last. The group continued to churn out hits through 1973 despite losing key members like David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks to solo careers. They kept up with the times, moving from the sweet harmonies to the tougher, funkier sound of hits like “Psychedelic Shack” and “Ball of Confusion,” while still recording lush, dreamy songs like “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)”
The Temptations have been through nearly two dozen members since their formation in 1960. The only original is baritone Otis Williams. But the five-part vocal harmony format has remained consistent, and their repertoire is unparalled.
The group will be at the Kent Stage.
