The Sweetback Sisters may be from Brooklyn but don’t expect hipster rock. The group foregrounds the fetching countrified vocal harmonies of Emily Miller and Zara Bode, which they liken to those of the Everly Brothers or the Judds.
The duo, backed by a four-musician band, have a distinctly retro take on country, back when it was all about cowgirl suits, honkytonks, cheatin’ hearts, and tears in your beer.
OK, so that’s the kind of country hipsters like. But so do many music lovers longing for the days when country meant Merle, Loretta, June and Johnny, not Kenny, Carrie, Tim and Faith.
They’ll be at Cain Park’s Evans Amphitheater as part of its $2 Tuesdays, a great chance to check out a new-to-you group for next to nothing.
