Shaker-Bred Drummer Drew Schultz Rolls Into Nighttown With His Funk Machine

Fri 7/5 @ 8:30PM

Drummer Drew Schultz has spent most of his musical career in the background as a sideman.

But oh, the people he’s backed up. While his primary gig was drumming with Motown’s Four Tops, he also performed with a who’s who of soul music, including Aretha Franklin, the Temptations, Martha Reeves, the Dramatics, and Harold Melvin’s Bluenotes. It gave the young musician (still in his mid-20s) some solid schooling in R&B music.

But he just got around to releasing a solo record last fall when he put out Back to Class, with 16 originals and performing and singing contributions from some of the musicians he’s back in the past, returning the favor.

The Brooklyn-based Schultz — who grew up in Shaker Heights — now has his own band, a five-piece group called the Funk Machine, which plays both Schultz’s music and soul and funk classics.

They’ll perform at Nighttown. Tickets are $10.
