Jimbo Mathus is best known as the instigator/leader of the sui generis Squirrel Nut Zippers, the North Carolina-based old-time Americana ensemble that was active from 1993 through 2000 and sporadically since then. It was cofounded and co-fronted by his ex-wife Katharine Whalen; they divorced a decade ago.
Mathus has returned to his native Mississippi. It’s from there that he currently leads the four-piece Tri-State Coalition. He’s thinking more contemporary terms now. His current music features country, blues and R&B influences — in other words, good old rock and roll.
He’ll be at the Beachland Tavern with the Torments and Texasplant.
