World Music Block Parties Debut at Transformer Station

Wed 7/10 @ 7:30PM

One of the positive outcomes of the shrinking globe is the access it’s provided music aficionados to a larger variety of what’s come to be called “world music” or “global music.” It refers to music rooted in native folk cultures.

Gypsy brass band Fanfare Ciocarlio comes from a little village in Romania in the Balkans. The story is that because they come from such an isolated part of the country, they preserved musical traditions that had died out in the country’s more accessible areas.

Then they were discovered by a music fan in 1996, who spread the word to festival and arts series bookers around the world and … well, doesn’t it sound like a classic movie plot about the conflict between tradition and modernity, rural and urban, progress and staying true to one’s roots?

Given the band’s extensive touring, recording and film appearances, one has to wonder what impact all of that had on Gypsies from an obscure village. Apparently, they have acclimated to the outside world and become part of a culture exchange, with DJs using their music for a touch of exoticism and the band performing versions of Western pop standards filtered through their unique sensibility.

Fanfare Ciocarlia will be in Cleveland as part of a new thing. Each Wednesday in July, the Cleveland Museum of Art is programming global music acts on a stage outside the independently owned and operated Transformer Station. Bands will be followed at 9:30 by outdoor film screenings on the block surrounding the Transformer Station. This week it’ll be Kevin Beasley’s “DJ Mix” of shorts and clips from videos and films.
