What better way to celebrate the end of summer than with a little black metal?
Abysmal Lord, who play at Now That’s Class, doesn’t hail from Scandinavia, the birthplace and hotbed of black metal, with its long, dark winters and its warlike Norse myths.
No, this trio comes from The City That Care Forgot — festive New Orleans. Of course, this is the same city that produced extreme metal bands like Down, Eyehategod, Acid Bath, Crowbar, and Goatwhore, existing side by side with the lively brass bands universally associated with the city. But don’t expect bead-throwing and second lines.
If you know anything about black metal, you know what Abysmal Lord sounds like: vocals not so much sung but coughed up over a dense clot of music with a racing, unbroken beat.
