Akron’s Square Records Celebrates Tenth Birthday at Musica

Sat 8/10 @ 9PM

Square Records in Akron’s Highland Square neighborhood is ten years old — quite an accomplishment for an independent record store.

It’s again marking the occasion with an all-Akron show at Musica in downtown Akron.

To headline, it’s resurrected Houseguest, whose career almost exactly spanned the ’00s. The indie pop quintet from Akron reached its peak in 2007 when it released High Strangeness, its third and final album, on Audio Eagle, the label run by Patrick Carney of the Black Keys. It faded away not too long after that.

The lineup features another veteran but still active Akron band, the arty, experimental Trouble Books, the husband-and-wife duo Keith Freund and Linda Lejsovka. Their latest album, Concatenating Fields, came out last year; they’re promising a new album, Love at Dusk, shortly.

The bill is rounded out by a newer band in Akron’s indie rock scene, Ultrasphinx, whose vocalist/guitarist Joe Dennis was in the well-regarded Party of Helicopters.

Tickets are $4.99.
