Austin, Texas’ Boyfrndz has roots in that noisy, abstract style of ’90s underground music that came to be dubbed “math rock.”
The group’s EP, Natures, released in March and produced by former Mars Volta organist Ikey Owens, has some of that genre’s jolting freeform style. But it’s heavily overlaid with surging swaths of melody that drive the music forward in a more linear manner than true math-rock proponents.
Boyfrndz will be at the Happy Dog. Cleveland’s Blaka Watra, which has its own take on dreamy+noisy, open, giving listeners a chance to preview its upcoming record release which it’ll debut at the Grog Shop next month. Manson (not Marilyn) is also on the bill.
Admission is $5.
