Cleveland’s horn-and-percussion Revolution Brass Band has become an ubiquitous local sensation since they came together three years ago.
Taking off from the New Orleans brass band tradition, and adding funk, soul and Afrobeat influences, their celebratory music is a party-starter. It’s difficult to resist moving your feet when they start to play.
But there’s a lot of art behind the music. The group was formed by trumpet players Jacob Wynne, who’s played with ensembles like Mifune and the Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Project, and John Kuegeler, who died last year at age 40, shortly after winning a Creative Workforce Fellowship.
Revolution Brass Band’s repertoire includes a plethora of soul, pop, R&B and jazz classics as well as compositions penned by members of the group, all of whom are accomplished working musicians.
They’ll be headlining the latest edition of Bad Racket Recording’s summer concert series at Mahall’s 20 Lanes.
Also on the bill is Phunky Panda Monkeys, an eight-piece ensemble with similar influences and goals, formed about the same time as Revolution Brass Band, but just beginning to make an impact on the local music scene.
Local ska band All Over the Place rounds out the show, with a completely different type of horn-heavy music.
