When Cleveland drummer Jared Mullins moved to San Diego about six years ago, he posted an ad on Craigslist that connected him to bassist Joe Brooks. The duo formed Heavy Glow, with Mullins on guitars and vocals. (The band is rounded out by drummer Michael Amster).
The group attracted the attention of guitarist/producer/San Diego native Stevie Salas, who has worked with people like Bootsy Collins, Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger, and American Idol’s Jordin Sparks. That connection opened a lot of doors for them.
Heavy Glow released its debut album Midnight Moan in 2011 and is currently working on its second. Its sound is a throwback to heavy early 70s rock with strands of blues, psychedelia, and proto-metal sludge.
The band has now relocated to Los Angeles and is currently on tour with Portland, Oregon stoner rockers Black Pussy.
They’ll be joined at the Happy Dog in Cleveland by bluesy Cincinnati trio Buffalo Killers, whose 2008 album Let It Ride was produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and who’ve toured with the Keys and the Black Crowes.
Admission is $5.
