Lottery League Has a Grand Finale at the Rock Hall

Wed 8/28 @ 7PM

The Rock Hall’s Summer in the City series wraps up with something a little different. Instead of a hip indie band sharing a bill with a promising local act, the four bands that will perform on the Rock Hall’s plaza (weather permitting) are ad hoc ensembles formed out of this year’s Lottery League.

That’s the project where a bunch of musicians put their names in a hopper to be drawn to form completely new bands with people they’ve never played with before. This year’s third Lottery League (the first two were in 2008 and 2010) involved 169 musicians who formed 42 new bands.

The bands wrote material and rehearsed for two month before showcasing the results in the 12-hour “Big Show” at the Agora April 13. This year’s Lottery League bands were much more diverse and fully developed, with many bands creating elaborate concepts and stage shows. It seemed like a shame that these were one-time performances.

Luckily, some of the bands have had further opportunities to perform, including this show at the Rock Hall which will feature Queens of Hell, Dinosaur Coffin, Douglas Adams’ Family, and Psychic Ills. Dinosaur Coffin actually had a twelve-foot coffin constructed for their Agora show which they’re threatening to bring to the Rock Hall. We’ll see how that works out.

Summer in the City is free. Refreshments are available on the plaza, and there’s always a food truck parked out front.
