Country artist Billy Joe Shaver never enjoyed much success as a singer. But many of his songs have become classics, recorded by artists like Kris Kristofferson, David Allan Coe, and, most notably, Waylon Jennings. He penned songs like “Old Chunk of Coal,” “Georgia on a Fast Train,” “When Fallen Angels Fly,” and “Honky Tonk Heroes.
Certainly his life is enough to fuel a few hundred country songs. It includes drug abuse, accidents, violence, a heart attack, arrests, marrying and divorcing and remarrying his wife, and the deaths of his wife, mother, and his son — the latter to heroin — within a year and a half. The 74-year-old singer has earned his weathered voice.
He’ll be at the Kent Stage. Chuck Mead, who co-founded influential ’90s alt-country band BR549, opens.
Tickets are $25.
